Whatever your age or physical condition, you can increase and maintain your fitness level. Benefits include more energy, fewer aches and pains, more joie de vivre - what are you waiting for! We'll be adding more suggestions for keeping fit shortly. Meanwhile, check out the fitness products in the health and fitness section. A few golden rules to keep in mind: 1 It's never too late to start getting fit: a few months' graded exercise can bring as much improvement in fitness at 75 as 25. 2 Forget the 'no pain, no gain' school of thought - moderation is the key, and a recent US study showed that brisk walking was sufficient to give the heart a work-out without too much strain. 3 Choose an activity you enjoy, otherwise you won't keep it up! There are plenty of alternatives, from dancing to swimming, weight training to t'ai chi. Tailor your activity to suit your personality - if you're a gregarious soul, long solitary walks will probably really depress you, but finding a congenial group to walk with could turn it into a pleasurable activity. 4 If your mobility is limited, there are still ways to improve fitness: with chair-based exercise, for example. 5 Anyone who hasn't done much exercise for a while should check with their doctor before embarking on any new activity.
