| Thought for the Day! Have you got a hang-up? Help the Aged does a lot of good work but they should concentrate on those activities rather then spend any of their time taking issue with the traffic sign designers over the way they display old people. The joy of being older is that most of us have got rid of those vain hang-ups: and the old people that haven't can kid themselves that the signs portray other old people and not themselves. Are the kids grumbling about how their signs look - I suspect not - they are just grateful that it helps keep them safe on the roads! If us old chaps spend any time on taking issue with what people think about us it will eat into the time we have left to enjoy things that really matter - my advice to those who grumble about the signs - "GET YOURSELF A LIFE". Petrol, heating, food cost increases: there's a way to cope! It’s the little things that we purchase every day that add up and have potentially crippling long-term effects on our finances. That means the coffee, sweets, fizzy drinks and cigarettes need to go. Eating out can be the single biggest drain on your wallet, and it’s not just eating in restaurants: sweets, pastries and other nibbles are also culprits. Aim to cook at home as much as possible. When you go shopping, don't allow yourself to sit and have elevensies in that café - instead wait till you get home and really enjoy it after your chores are done. When you do occasionally have a meal out, skip the starters and dessert, limit your drinks. If your social life revolves around meeting a friend in a restaurant, think how much nicer if you entertained them at home. They would almost certainly reciprocate, so it would be like getting two for the price of one - with the added bonus of truly relaxing in familar surroundings. Cooking and dining at home could save you £2,000 a year, which should help to cover the price hikes. Hanging onto your money is not easy. Every day shops try very hard to persuade you to part with it. So the next time you are tempted to buy something that you know you don’t “need”, force yourself to wait three days and then decide if you really want it!
